The People Waiting in Darkness
Welcome to Advent, a season of waiting for the baby Jesus to be born! In our sermon series this Advent, we are going to be looking at times God’s people waited. The Hebrews waited hundreds of years for God to deliver them from the oppression of the Egyptians and lead them back into the land he promised to Abraham. The Israelites waited 70 years for God to deliver them from the Babylonian captivity and let them return home to Jerusalem. And in between the writing of the Old Testament and New Testament, over 400 years, God’s people waited to hear something… anything… from God. And, as God’s people today, we wait in the now-but-not-yet of our salvation, forgiven and set free in Christ, and yet waiting for his return and the making new of all things. There is a lot we can learn from how God’s people have waited as we also wait on the Lord.
